Get to know Knit 1

1. What is your favorite part of the Chicago Yarn Crawl?

The energy. Everyone is filled with so much enthusiasm and excitement and the community support is palpable. It's also really fun to see the patterns each shop creates!

2. How long have you been in business and how did you get started?

In 2025, Knit 1 is celebrating our 20th year in business! We've always been located in the North Center neighborhood, but about 10 years ago Knit 1 used to inhabit a smaller space across the street from where our shop is today. Breean is the third owner of Knit 1 and will be celebrating her first year anniversary on August 16th! Breean has been in the fiber arts industry for 21+ years, having designed knitting patterns for Malabrigo, Swans Island, and Art Yarns. She also interned at Interweave Press back in the day...and she even worked at the original location of Nina for a few years while getting her Master's degree!

3. What makes your shop unique?

We have a beautiful space and a well-organized, large selection of natural fibers at a variety of price ranges, but that isn't what makes Knit 1 unique. What makes Knit 1 unique is our VIBE. We are a friendly, welcoming, inclusive, FUN shop that prioritizes community, skill-building, empowerment, and resilience. We're also really generous with support, help, and guidance. And we're grateful to be part of a thriving neighborhood of creative small businesses!

4. What is your favorite part of being an LYS owner?

If you can believe it, I have wanted to have my own yarn shop since I was in my 20s! If I would have been asked this question 20 years ago, I would have said something about creative expression, like helping people pick out beautiful colors or the excitement that finishing a project brings...

20 years later, I recognize that what I really love about owning a yarn shop is the space it creates for people to feel seen and heard and valued. Spaces like this are so important. It means the world to me to provide a space for people to be themselves, to create beautiful things, to learn new skills, to connect with one another, and to turn the challenges that we face in life into beautiful art.
