Get to know TLD Design Center (Westmont)

1. What is your favorite part of the Chicago Yarn Crawl?

The opportunity to meet such a diverse group of fiber Art enthusiasts & makers as they have fun yarn shop hopping around Chicagoland.  I’m excited to introduce each new generation of yarn crawlers to the array of fiber art techniques we specialize in beyond knitting and crocheting.

2. How long have you been in business and how did you get started?

I started my business home based in 1985, dyeing yarn, hand weaving, knitting and sewing ArtWear pieces selling at local Fairs.

In 1993 (33 years ago!) I opened TLD Design Center & Gallery in Westmont with my mother, JoAnn Deck.  I began teaching weaving and all of the other yarny arts in 1994.  Badge Earning activities for Girls Scouts since 1998 and Fiber Art Summer Camps for kids (& adults) since 2001.

August 2015 - I realized one of my bigger dreams when I purchased a live/work storefront building in Berwyn, IL.  TLD DESIGN CENTER is now operating in both locations.

3. What makes your shop unique?

It’s true.....I’ve never operated like a typical “Yarn Shop” and might be a little (maybe a lot!) confusing.

  1. owned and operated by a life-long, career stitcher (sewing and playing with yarn since age 4) operated daily by an Award winning Fiber Artist who is a former college instructor in sewing/fashion/clothing, textile science/design & Fiber Art

  2. FREE UNLIMITED-TIME CURBSIDE PARKING

  3. yarn/thread on cones (alongside balls, hanks & skeins)

  4. yarn, fiber, threads and fabrics painted, printed and hand-dyed on location by owner (classes available, too)

  5. Classes taught by a *patient* instructor for kids through Recently Retired and beyond.

  6. Classes for first-timers through refreshers & well-seasoned

  7. Classes for fashion, pattern making and knitwear design

  8. Classes for advanced and professional level skill set

  9. Knitting Patterns & Kits designed by owner.

  10. Floor Looms, Table Looms and Rigid Heddle looms for sale, rental and use in Classes.

  11. Spinning Wheels for sale, rental and students use in classes.

  13. Studio work space rental for wet Felting, weaving, knitting machine metal smith, glass fusing & lampwork

START RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE....JUST START!

4. What is your favorite part of being an LYS owner?

Is this a trick question? Being surrounded by yarn...talking about yarn....looking at the yarn...touching the yarn....smelling the yarn. Helping customers and students find or create the perfect yarn.
